Inspired by the second great quintet of Miles Davis, and the kinetic, forward looking composition of Charles Mingus, the Tom Luther Quintet (TLQ) performs original & vibrant jazz that draws equally from the worlds of jazz, European classical, and ambient music. The music of TLQ is engaging, the grooves infectious, and the interplay among the group members is predominant in their performances. The band is a mix of young lions and veterans. The musical conversations they create make unique and often explosive performances. Formed in 2009 as a vehicle for composer/pianist Tom Luther, the band has produced two albums, "Everything Is Blue" (2012), and "Necessity" (2015), and performed all over Maine. In his review of "Necessity", Brian Kevin of Down East Magazine said the music of TLQ "comes out of the cool jazz tradition, with genetic links to greats like Lennie Tristano and Dave Brubeck". The TLQ draws from the wellspring of several traditions to create a unique and exciting concert experience that acknowledges the past and looks to the future.
Both "Everything Is Blue"(2012) and "Necessity"(2015) are available through Amazon as well as I-tunes. The TLQ also streams on Spotify and Pandora.
